It’s cold, dark, rainy.

Where did the sun go?

I look at the sky in question,

But it just stares gloomily back at me.

I wring my hands, purse my lips,

And I pace around my chamber.

Is this an omen, a sign,

Telling me not to go?

But I must go.

I must leave.

I cannot stay here anymore.

He must be worried about me now.

He will wonder where I am.

“Be it rain or shine, you must come,” he’d said.

“Or I will have to come looking for you.”

Oh, but he cannot come here!

I must go.

I must leave.

I can’t let anyone see me.

I hide my face in the hood of my cloak

As I step out of the house, cautiously.

As though in protest, the sky opens up

With a bolt of lightning – startling me momentarily.

Within seconds, I’m drenched,

But I cannot stop now.

I head out on foot, shivering –

Whether out of cold or fear, I do not know.

It takes long, but I reach the place,

Drenched from head to toe.

He’s waiting for me in his carriage –

He’s waiting for me.

My heart swells when I catch sight of him –

He’s the only one I trust now.

He pulls me close as I step into the carriage,

Encircling me in his arms.

I settle down in quiet contentment,

Knowing that the danger has passed.

I am finally free now,

Finally free to be with him.

It is only then that I hear the quiet, metallic sound,

And feel the dagger pressing into my neck.

But what – I have no time to think

As I feel the sharp slash across my throat.

Intense pain.

Too much blood.

Numbness creeping along my body.

The last thing I remember is that cold gleam in his eyes.

And then, there’s nothing.

Love

Love can be simple.
It can be the pleasure you get
When you read an all-time favourite book of yours.
It can be the happy reminiscing
While listening to an old song.
It can be the secret smiles you share
With your loved one across a room.

Love can be complicated.
It can be the tears you shed
When you fight with someone dear.
It can be the tug you feel in your chest
When you see an old lover.
It can even be the pain you feel
When your heart has been broken by someone.

But one thing can be said for sure –
Love is universal.
It’s all-consuming.
Omnipresent.
It makes us laugh,
It makes us cry;
But in the end we know
That each one of us has loved,
At least once in our lives.

That I had to cut a creature.

That I really should be neater.

Those Eyes

Those eyes had been my guide.

Those eyes had been my light.

Those eyes had held love for me,

Which disappeared all in a night.

Where I go wrong?

How did I end up here?

What made me deceive those beautiful eyes –

Had it only been fear?

I remember when

Those eyes had looked away from me,

Filled with a deep hurt.

The hurt had then changed to anger,

And my guiding light had disappeared.

Yes, it had been my fault –

I know this today.

But what’s done is done now,

To him I have nothing left to say...

Death's Bride

“You are my bride,” Death snarled one night,

And hence you will do as I say.”

I shivered in fear, staring into his cold eyes,

Knowing I had no escape.

He leaned down and whispered in my ear,

Telling me what to do.

Hearing his words made me gasp in shock,

And stare at him with hate in my eyes.

He sent me up to the surface of earth,

And guided me to the house.

I walked - my feet making no sound -

Towards the open door.

I went over to the sleeping form,

And tears jumped into my eyes,

For there lay the most beautiful girl,

No older than a few years.

I woke her with a gentle shake,

And she sat up to stare at me.

She seemed to know who I was,

For she stood up, looking determined.

I took her with me, back to Death,

Who snatched her away with impatient hands.

I turned away, my eyes shut tight,

For I knew what was coming next.

A few seconds later I heard her shrieks,

Coming from down below.

A single sob escaped my throat,

As my dead heart grieved for the girl.

She now came out, followed by Death,

Who had a triumphant snarl on his face.

Her eyes were dead now, just like mine,

And her once beating heart stood still.

She looked at me with those lifeless eyes,

And it made my still heart wrench in pain.

Death saw the pain in my eyes,

And laughed softly, coldly.

He leaned down to whisper, again, in my ear,

“You are my bride. You will do as I say.”

I shut my eyes in a different kind of pain –

The pain of knowing that this would never end.

Revelation

I stood on my balcony,

Looking up at the sky,

Up at the beautiful moon

Who was shining so bright.

She smiled gracefully down at me,

Erasing all my worries.

It filled me from head to toe

With a divine and serene calm.

Her sons and daughters, the beautiful stars,

Stood by their mother, twinkling merrily.

They seemed to be playing a silent game with me,

And I played along, smiling gently.

It was in this perfect moment,

While I was surrounded only by beauty,

That I felt that everything would be alright;

That everything would work out eventually for me.

The moon seemed proud of my newfound revelation,

For she beamed, brighter than before.

The stars, sensing their mother’s happiness,

Twinkled and danced even more.

I walked back into my room,

Satisfied with everything I had.

I laid my head down on my soft pillow,

Knowing life couldn't be so bad.

Reminiscence

The tears have dried up now,

But my heart is still heavy.

I think of the past, when

Life seemed so easy.

How I long for those years now,

When we were young and carefree;

When all problems and fights revolved

Around stolen dolls and learning ABC.

When did life stop being so easy?

When did we stop laughing all day?

When did we start caring so much

About what others have to say?

I sit and ponder over these thoughts,

I know not what to do.

How do I learn to live again,

And start everything anew?

The only thing that keeps me going

Is the promise of hope in the air.

All I have to do is move on now,

And try not to care...

Falling Apart

Okay, this is a recent poem I came up with. Actually, it's more of a song, and it's from a guy's perspective. I actually wrote this for a story, but I decided to put it up here as well, as another poem of mine.

Baby, I know I was the one who left you,
But that didn't mean I stopped loving you too.
Girl, all I needed was a little time,
Tell me, was that such a terrible crime?
But baby, you had to go and break my heart,
And now I'm completely falling apart.
Why do you do this to me?
Why can't you just let me be?

You made a promise to me, your face aglow,
That you would never leave me, never let go.
I thought we'd have a future to look to,
And maybe one day we'd be saying, "I do."
But baby, you went and broke my heart,
And now I'm completely falling apart.
Why do you do this to me?
Why can't you just let me be?

What went wrong? What did we miss?
How did it all come down to this?
Now comes the hard part, where I move on,
Breaking what we had, our beautiful bond.
Oh baby, why did you go and break my heart?
Don't you see how completely I'm falling apart?

A Silver Jubilee of Memories

It's all those memories that count-
The happy and the sad ones,
The pleasant and the unpleasant,
That build the foundation of your marriage.

It's all those memories that count-
From the small things, like
Cheering Dad up by poking and teasing him,
Or nursing Mum when she falls sick;
To the bigger things, like
Helping each other out in times of crisis,
Or being the first to apologize after a big fight-
These are what make your marriage work.

It's all those memories that count-
The subtle things you do for each other, everyday,
Without asking for any repayment-
These are the memories that count,
That keep your love alive.

It's all those memories that count-
All those times when you look ready to eat each other alive,
Or when you argue over the silliest things;
And all those other times,
The times that count,
When you seem like the perfect couple.

So, through all these years
Of loving, laughing,
Fighting, and forgiving,
It will always be love that matters,

Letter

It's a bright new day.
I haven't slept all night long,
And my whole body aches to sleep.
But I cannot do so.

My eyelids feel heavy,
But I cannot close them.
Something's keeping me awake,
But I know not what it is.
I drag myself out of bed,
Searching for clues around the house.
I search all day long,
But nothing triggers a mental reaction.

Then the doorbell rings-
It's a postman holding a letter for me.
It's a letter from him.
I take the letter and rip it open,
Eager to read his familiar handwriting.

He talks of his life at the border,
The flurry of activities, the constant threat of war.
He says he has made many friends,
Friends who would die for each other.
Then he tells me not to worry about him,
Because he's not letting me go anytime soon.
He tells me again how much he loves me,
How much he misses me.
He ends his letter with the words,
"Don't worry, love. I'm coming home soon."

I read the letter about a hundred times in my bed,
Running my fingers over the words,
Memorizing them.
Then, smiling, I fall into a peaceful sleep.

Memories

Remember the time when you ruined my hairdo,

And got shouted at by my mother?

You had to take a comb and fix my hair,

Just as it was before.

You had no idea what you had to do,

But still you attempted your best.

And even though I ended up looking like a poodle,

I appreciated your effort.

Remember the times you teamed up with my brother,

And teased me till I would cry?

I would bawl till someone came to attend to me,

And then shout at both of you.

Achieving that, my tears would mysteriously dry up,

And a smile would light my face.

Now even though the teasing, crying and complaining

Are old and forgotten habits,

Their memories continue to live in my mind,

Like faded photographs in an album.

I look at them when I’m bored,

I look at them when I’m depressed,

And I look at them now,

As I write you this poem.

The Wind

The wind swoops into my room,
Unseen and unheard.
I feel it rushing through my hair
And I smile sadly.

I want it to last all through the night,
Just so I won't feel alone.
I want it to sweep away all my worries,
And take them far, far away.
But that does not happen.

Sighing, I turn my head away from the wind,
Suddenly annoyed with it.
The wind, seeming to feel my annoyance,
Blows with renewed gusto.

It tries to catch my attention,
By making my hair fly about wildly.
Even more annoyed, I shut my windows,
Stopping the wind from entering.

Now the wind can be heard, banging against the windows,
Rattling the shutters noisily.
It bangs and howls for more than an hour,
Wanting to receive my attention.
Let it howl and rage all it wants,
I think bitterly, ignoring it.

Suddenly it stops, followed by a thick silence,
That fills the room, suffocating me.
Puzzled with the sudden silence,
I get up and walk to a window.
I open it and peer outside,
Thinking that any moment the wind will be back.
But I'm wrong.

There's no trace of the howling wind,
That was threatening to break down my windows just minutes ago.
There's not even a gentle, soothing breeze to comfort me,
Just a deathly silence hanging in the air.

I shut the window, miserable and disappointed.
Then all I do is lie down and weep.

A few forced smiles,
A few forced laughs-
This is all she needs to convince them,
Convince them that everything is alright.

She's so cheerful on the outside,
So radiant and bright.
But only she feels the growing emotion,
The emotion of depression inside her.

This emotion threatens to take over,
Threatens to break her down.
But she thrusts it aside,
And buries it deep within herself.

Her eyes glisten with tears, now and then,
Tears that she tries to control.
They all believe its the trick of the light,
Not noticing that she's breaking into pieces inside.

She just wants to end it all,
End it and be free.
But she knows that that will be a coward's play,
And that life will get better one day.

Thus, she faces life and waits,
She waits for that day in her life,
That day when her eye's will not be glistening,
With tears and emotions ready to overflow.

Betrayal

Every breath she'd taken had been for him,
He'd been her very reason for living.
But then he had walked away,
Leaving her with nothing at all to say.

He had promised her, with earnest eyes,
That he would never leave her alone.
But this promise he did not keep,
And he left her alone to sob and weep.

He had not given her a reason,
A reason for his betrayal.
He had packed up his things one early morn,
And, without a word, he had gone.

And after he left, she had wept all day,
She had wept for the man she loved.
They found her body one day, lying in the rain,
The cause of her death had been her unending pain.

He came to her funeral and wept quietly,
He wept for the girl he had once loved.
Even though he had moved on, and had met another girl,
He knew that she would always be a part of his world.

Wondering which way to go.

Or should I just go back?

Now I'm standing on solid ground,
Thinking that I'm safe.

And I don't know where to go.

Or should I just go back?

Maybe life is meant to be this way,
Maybe that's how I'm supposed to live-
Sometimes in an ocean filled with confusion,
Sometimes on shaky ground.
And when I'm confused or unstable,
I will ask myself these questions:

A new year has begun.
The sun seems to shine brighter,
And the day seems to be promising.
The taste of hope hangs in the air...

How easily we forget all the pain,
As the old year withers and dies.
We never remember all those sorrowful times,
We just look forward to the new year with eagerness.

Will this year bring a wave of hope?
Will we see a brighter future?
These are the questions that run in our minds,
While we celebrate the birth of a new year.

The first day of the year.
It brings a wave of laziness with it.
We make excuses to escape all forms of work,
And we sit back and relax all day.

People shouting, crackers bursting-
There's no time for sleep, a new year's begun!
We make resolutions, a hundred of them,
Not knowing if we can live up to them.

I look back at the previous year,
Which died just the day before.
I laugh, at all those stupid resolutions
That I'd made at the beginning of the year.
I'll surely make new ones this year,
And laugh again when this one dies.

Watching the floating snow flakes outside.
Her eyes followed one particular flake,
That resembled a tiny angel.
She reached out to grab the little flake
And then brought it inside.
But when she opened her tiny hand,
All she saw was a drop of water.
A single tear escaped her eye,
Her lips trembled.
She felt as though her hope was gone,
Along with the little angel.

Today she sits by the open window,
Watching leaves flutter to the ground.
She reaches out to grab a little leaf,
That's shaped like a tiny angel.
Her face lights up with a blossoming smile,
For she knows that this time her hope will stay.
She gets up to put the leaf in a book,
Her hope back, her life restored.

I wait so patiently, my breath held still,
I wait for three words from him that will change my life.
He gives me a lot of words to hear,

My friends think that he's not right for me,
But I give no heed to their harsh words.

The Spirits

The wind blew on my face
As I stood in the middle of an empty field.
It was getting cold
But little did I care.
All I had to do was call the spirits.
And I did....

They came in huge gusts of wind
And it seemed to me as tho' they were whispering,
All at once, into my ear
Till I could bear it no more.

I shouted out a chant
But they did not go away.
Their whispers were becoming louder and louder,
And my chants were becoming softer and softer
Till I could barely speak...

Then, all of a sudden, everything went quiet and still,
Including me,
For I could talk no more and move no more.
All I could do was stare,
As I lay on the ground in my last moments,
Thinking of my family.
I thought of them till I could think no more,
As I felt a growing numbness
That reached my head and fogged my eyes.
And then, everything went black...

The Angel

On a night when there was no light,
I saw a breath-taking view.
I saw a beatiful angel-
An angel dressed in white,
An angel so very bright,
An angel full of light.

I looked at her beautiful and calm face,
And at her pure white gown made of lace.
She smiled at me as I drew nearer
And I returned the smile to the beautiful angel-
The angel dressed in white,
The angel so very bright,
The angel full of light.

I still had a few more steps to go,
A few more steps, to know
Why the angel had come to me.
But just as I reached her
There was a blinding flash of light;
And then, she was gone.
There was no trace of the beautiful angel-
The angel dressed in white,

The angel full of light.

I woke to the melodious sounds of the birds,
A million birds saying a million words;
And then I knew that it was all a dream,
A beautiful dream that made me smile;
A beautiful dream of a beautiful angel-

The Flame

The flame gave out a glowing warmth,
As it danced around in circles.
I stood there in its dancing shadow and watched in awe,
As it took control of my every thought.

Hypnotized by the dancing flame,
I stood there in its shadowy light.
And as it flickered and breathed its last,
I stood there, miserable and all alone.

We are much alike.
When we are happy, we dance around
And give out a glowing warmth.
But when we are enveloped in a blanket of sadness,
We become cold and uncaring,
Like an unwelcome wintery night.

The rain splattered on the ground,

Mother Nature herself came down to me,
And placed her palm on my cheek.
The feather-like touch of her gentle palm,

And out of the gloom of this dark night,
Came a ray of blinding bright light.
This, I knew, was the light of hope,
This was the light of a life renewed.
The pieces of my life rejoined again,
And at last I knew the cause of my happiness.

My Best Friend

Now this is a girl you should get to know;
She can be the sweetest friend, or the deadliest foe.
Riding bikes is her one passion,
And being a tomboy is more of her fashion.
Football- man! She's crazy about it;
If she doesn't play it, she's sure to throw a fit!

The most she could do to a guy is be his best friend-
This is her motto and her trend.
She loves to dance, rap and sing,
But dancing in public is not her thing.
She can be so shy when she's talking to a guy,
But no guy will ever make her sigh.
"Love is not worth it."-this is what she says;
She and love surely go separate ways.

Animated movies- now this makes her happy;
She likes no movies that are sad or sappy.
Her choice of music includes rap and rock;
She likes to laugh, and loves to talk!

We've been best friends for four long years now,
And we'll continue to be so- of this I vow.

Mother Nature

The trees swayed to and fro
Beside the gently flowing river.
I was sitting under a huge, majestic oak tree,
Looking at everything that was there for the eye to see.

I looked at the gigantic mountains
And at the green grass running along their sloping sides.
I heard the soft songs sung by the birds,
Each of them saying unspoken words.

As I was sitting in this calm and serene place,
I felt as though nothing could go wrong.
I realised the beauty of Mother Nature's art
And I felt a soft glow of warmth in my heart.

She started heading towards her favourite place,
The only place which gave her comfort- the park.
As the park loomed into view,
Her tears started drying up.
She sat on a bench with her chin in her hands,
Watching the other children play.

It was then that it happened- a tiny little miracle
That brought hope and happiness back into her life.
As she sat on the cold park bench,
Something fluttered down onto her lap.
She looked down to see what had settled there,
And uttered a cry of happiness.
The light seemed to come back into her eyes,
Her lips parted in a smile.
On her lap was a tiny leaf,
A tiny leaf that was shaped like an angel.

Many years later, she looks at the leaf,
Her lips parting in a smile.
She knows it was a gift from the Gods above,
A gift that brought hope back into her life.

The Five Pebbles Of Life

I count the pebbles in my hand,
Running my fingers over their smooth surface.
The first one is filled with all my worries,
The second with my sorrow.
The third one is filled with the pain in my heart
That never wants to leave.
There are two more pebbles in my hand-
One is hope and the other, joy.
I stare at them with an everlasting sadness
For I know they will never come back into my life.
My worries are still prominent,
And my sorrow grips me.
The pain slices through my heart, sharper than ever,
And I feel like I’ll never get through this.
I ask myself, ‘Will I ever laugh again?
Will I ever shed my pain?’
But my heart gives no reply.
It just beats with a steady rhythm,
But with no life.
The tears slip out, flowing down my cheeks,
And fall onto the sand.
I gaze at the vast sea in front of me,
Till I feel a hand on my shoulder.
I turn around in mild surprise
And feel my heart jump a mile.
He stands there in front of me,
Gazing deep into my eyes.
His eyes are filled with radiating warmth
As he wipes away my tears.
He speaks in the softest of voices
Saying that everything is alright.
My heart beats with a life renewed
As I fall into his arms.
Three pebbles slip out of my hands-
The first is filled with all my worries,
The second with my sorrow.
The third is full of the pain
That has now left my heart.
I feel the contents of the other two
Fill my entire body-
One is filled with hope and the other, with joy.

Broken Heart

He made a promise to me two years ago,
That he would never leave me, never let go.
How was I to know that it was all a lie,
A lie that would one day make me weep & cry?

He never gave me a warning, never a sign,
He always used to smile at me & say, “You’re mine.”
But how was I to know that it was all a lie,
A vicious lie that would one day make me cry?

We have now grown so far apart,
And I’m still mending my broken heart.
He’s ripped me to shreds for the world to see
The injustice that he has done to me.

Day by day my heart reforms,
And I recover from these dark storms.
But still my heart has one big scar,
Left by the man who will never go far.

As The Day Ends....

I walk around in the fields,
Looking at every flower.
How pretty they all seem to me,
Each one near and far.

The grass tickling my feet.
Little creatures run here and there,
Trying to look discreet.

I walk around in the fields,
Watching the setting sun.
The red-hued clouds chase each other around,
Looking like they’re having fun.

And now the sun has gone down,
Leaving the sky black.
I stare up at the rising moon,
Knowing the sun will be back.

Going Back Home

The sun was setting in the western sky,
Lighting up the field in a soft orange shade.
I saw the sun going down,
Going back home to sleep for the night.
In the distance I saw a cluster of trees,
Each having its own green shade.
I saw birds flying everywhere.
They too were going home to sleep for the night.

I heard my mother calling me,
And yet I did not hear her.
I was engrossed in the beauty unfolding before me,
Looking at every one go home to sleep for the night.
The scenery was fading now,
Fading into darkness.
Darkness that would soon disappear,
With the now waking moon.
Then, like the sun and the birds,
I too decided to go home,
Go home, and sleep for the night.

From Darkness To Light

The moonlight falls on my face
As I lie down on my bed, alone.
The light’s becoming dimmer and dimmer
As a set of dark clouds is covering the light, the hope.
I look out of my window, searching for the light,
The light which will bring happiness back into my life,
But all I see is darkness.....

The darkness goes on and on
Till I think that I’ll never see light again.
All my hope has drained out
And all I can pray for is a light at the end of this tunnel
But it seems as tho' my prayers will not be answered.

Night becomes day, but I'm still waiting,
Waiting for that light.
It does not come as dawn breaks
As the dark clouds have refused to move.
It's as tho' the sun is hiding it's face from me,
Scared that he too will become miserable.

Just as I think that I cannot go through this anymore,
The sun peeps out of the clouds.
A ray of pure gold light strikes my face
And at long last I smile.
The smile reaches my eyes, lighting up my face.
Now I know nothing can go wrong.

My Mum....

We spotted three kittens lying in the rain-

Three black specks in this vast world.
They were brought home-
Three tiny shivering kittens with eyes barely opened.
You gave us encouraging words & hugs
As we nursed & cared for them.
But slowly their condition deteriorated
And they looked as though they would not survive.
We lost our hope & shed our tears,
But you never gave up.
You helped us nurse & mother them
Till their very last moment.
Even though they are in a different world now,
We will never forget your warmth & love.
You helped us get through their passing on,
And now we know the power of your love.
